That's right, a Princess lived among the commoners of Amarillo (read, In a far off land...). I happened upon this story during my Provisional year in Junior League of Amarillo (laugh if you must, I enjoyed it).
My Provisional year was cut short. I discovered that I needed to better prioritize family time (that is not the point of this story, and
this is crossed out). As, I was saying... I was
hostessing a home for the Saint Andrew's Tour of Homes. My hostess duties included informing the visitors of the history and
some fun facts of the home. As such, Richard Ware the
home owner, gave all of us hostesses a tour. While the others chatted amongst themselves, I was instantly captivated. He mentioned a man, who had gone to design school in Oklahoma. He had earned a scholarship to study design in Paris, but was unable to do so because of the war. So, he continued to study in New York.
Then he enlisted
in the U.S Army as a Captain and later became a Monuments Man. He would assist Prince Ludwig Von Hesse-Darmstadt and his family in retrieving lost objects of art, seized from the family
homes castles (let's face it "castles" sounds so much cooler). His name, was Clyde Harris. Seriously, I felt like I was at story time in the library. I instantly knew, I HAD to know more.
It's been 10 years, since that tour. The excitement has not
waned. Over the past few years, I've thought about, mentioned and dreamt about writing a book about it. I mentioned it to a friend, a little over a year ago. It turned out, her husband knows the Princess' family and even got to go to a family castle in Germany for the christening of her grandson. WOW! A couple of weeks ago, Dad and I were talking and he said, "Why don't you write a blog about it".
Kudos, to this man, my Dad - for encouraging me to follow a dream, just
taking a different avenue.
So, here we are. I am in the process of getting more information. Rights to pictures. Interviews. There. Is. SO. Much. To. Be. Done. But, if you'll take this journey with me - I think it will all be worth it.
